3 Masks for Glowing Skin

After cleansers, masks are my favorite skincare items to use. The results are often instant, I can use one after another, I can treat different parts of my face with different masks - the possibilities are endless. And it's a great way to try a brand without fully investing in a moisturizer or serum. I've recently tested out a few new masks that are designed to help detoxify, clarify and exfoliate the skin. I love using these types of masks at least once a week because they help to keep my skin looking fresh and glowing.
1. Dermalogica Charcoal Rescue Masque - Hormonal breakouts have met their match with this mask. The activated charcoal helps to draw out impurities and my skin is less oily the next few days after using. But the added bonus of alpha hydroxy acids to this mask means that the skin gets a nice chemical exfoliation, while removing the mask gives a manual exfoliation. The result is super smooth and radiant skin. However, if you have sensitive skin, I would recommend a patch test first to ensure it doesn't cause irritation.

2. Pixi Glow Mud Mask - Compared to the Dermalogica mask, this Pixi mask is smoother in texture with little to no graininess. It still did an amazing job of detoxifying the skin and helping to decongest especially when I was having breakouts, and my skin looked radiant and felt soft and soothed after using. If I had to rank them, this Pixi mud mask is the most gentle out of all three masks which is nice when my skin may be feeling a tad more sensitive but still needs a good clarifying treatment.
3. Tula Exfoliating Treatment Mask - Tula is a new brand to me and as I said before, the first product I like to try from a line is typically their masks (or cleansers - I'm a sucker for either). While this mask still gave me a strong exfoliation, I loved the addition of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids along with Vitamin E to help nourish and condition the skin. Too often exfoliating masks can focus only on removing dead skin, but I loved how my face felt replenished and hydrated after using this. The lactic acid gives a chemical exfoliation while the small granules give a gentle manual exfoliation. It's been a great addition to my winter skincare routine because it manages to balance smoothing my skin with keeping it calm and hydrated. It's a masking win/win! AND - as a bonus for all those that are interested in trying this or any other products from the Tula line out, they have generously given me a discount code for 25% off the entire line + free shipping! A Recap Of All The Sun And Beauty Products I Brought With Me To The Beach

Pale skin and sunscreen go together like peanut butter and jelly, like milk and cookies, like Maree and all cupcakes. I always have quite a few on hand for the summer because I always need one no matter where I go, especially the beach. In addition to sunscreen, I always have an after sun lotion and hydrating spray to help apply during and after our beach fun. Or as I call it 'sit under the umbrella wearing a big hat fun'.

1. MDSolarSciences Mineral Creme SPF 30 - To be honest, I had received this as a press sample a while ago and threw it in my beach bag not knowing what to expect. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It has a slight tint to it which was delightful since many sunscreens can have that white/purplish cast on the skin. I used this mostly on my face and chest and loved the way it absorbed right into my skin.

2. Dermalogica After Sun Repair - This is absolutely refreshing and necessary after a beach day. I typically put it in the refrigerator a few minutes before I am going to use, but this time I brought it with me to the beach to apply right after. I had a few patches of skin that got a bit red, so after I rinsed off at the showers, I layered this on those areas. It immediately soothes and begins to heal, and helps to prevent any peeling. It can feel a bit sticky so I only use a small amount and if not applying directly after the beach, then I apply before I go to bed.

3. Clarins Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Oil Spray - I always associate tanning oils with my early teen years when I would just bake myself at the beach all day. Yowsa! I normally avoid tanning or sunscreen oils at all costs now because I associate them with fried skin. But Clarins is the skincare expert so I figured I needed to give it a try. I only used it on my arms just in case, and surprisingly I did not burn. Obviously it has SPF 30 so there is sun protection built in, but I was happy with the results as well as the texture. It dissolved immediately into my skin and did not leave any annoying residue that would allow sand to stick to me.

4. Dr. Dennis Gross Sheer Mineral Sun Spray SPF 50 - I have two words for this sunscreen - HOLY GRAIL. I tried this spray on a whim after it was sent to me, and had absolutely no preconceived notions as to how it would perform. One spray in and I was amazed. The texture of the lotion is so smooth and hydrating that it feels as if I am putting lotion on rather than sunscreen. I have used it a bunch of times since the beach and each time I fall more and more in love with it. Consider this a summertime staple in my book. If you are looking for a high level SPF sunscreen for everyday as well as at the beach, this is it! Your skin will thank me and send me a muffin basket.

5. No. 7 Hydrating Mineral Water Spray - A day at the beach is not complete without a hydrating mist. This is a no muss, no fuss spray that helps me stay hydrated and cool. Even when left in my beach bag the whole day, it was still refreshing to use. I even took a bit out when I got home to put in a travel sized spray to keep with me in my purse. Mist on the go is my new motto.

6. Hampton Sun SPF 15 Gel - Not an oil and not a lotion, this texture falls right in the middle. Because of the low SPF, I prefer this for a day running errands or when I am only going to be out for a short period of time. It is not strong enough for my long days at the beach, but for many who want to get a nice even-toned tan, this is perfect for sun bathing. My husband has used this each time we go to the beach and he loves the color he gets afterwards. I do find it helps promote healthy tanning which is why I don't mind it when I plan to be out for an hour or two - even pale gals prefer a teensy tiny bit of color once in a while.

The Sunscreens I Will Be Wearing Under My Makeup This Summer

the best sunscreens to wear under makeup
SPF is a non-negotiable for me, but it is definitely more important than ever in the summer. While there are many great sunscreens out there, not all work well under makeup, and for me that is paramount. I may switch to a lighter formulation of foundation in the warmer months but other than that, my makeup routine does not change. So finding something that wears well, does not make me more oily or alter the finish/texture of my foundation is something I am in constant search for. I have been testing out a few over the past few weeks and narrowed it down to the ones I have enjoyed the most.

1. Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF 30 - I have been using this sunscreen for almost a year now, and it's a staple in my routine. Thicker in texture, only a little is needed to cover the entire face. Though it helps keep me matte, I can get a bit oily by midday so I often use a setting powder over my makeup in the morning.

2. Revive Sensitif Renewal Cream Daily Cellular Sunscreen SPF 30* - I received a sample of this when I stopped by a Revive counter a month ago. I put it aside and forgot about it because frankly I have approximately 14,589 samples at home. I pulled it out randomly one day and tried it on. Well, that sample sealed the deal. It was flawless - the texture, the way it goes on the skin, the way makeup wears over it - everything! It is quite the splurge, but I can see why. I applied it on a morning when I had some irritation and redness, and it soothed it right away. Good for all skin types, even sensitive, but as an oily skinned gal, this was simply perfect.

3. Shiseido Urban Environment Oil-Free SPF 42* - This is an entirely different texture than the previous two discussed, and reminded me of other sunscreens I have used in the past that I did not like. So initially, the watery-like texture and slightly powdery dry down finish put me off, until I let it sit on my skin for a minute. It felt velvety and soft to the touch, and made my face matte immediately. My skin did look a tad lighter once it was on, but nothing that would deter me from using. Once I applied my foundation on top, it wore beautifully. Overall I think this may be a better option for oilier skin types.

4. Sunday Riley Cashmere SPF 30 Sun Defense* - Reading the reviews for this sunscreen left me a bit confused about how it would work on my skin. Well I am glad I gave it a try because it was stunning. My husband actually commented to me the first time I wore it asking me if "I did something different with my skin" because it looked so perfect. The texture is a mix between a cream and a light gel, and a little bit goes a long way. Many reviews mentioned a pilling or balling up once on the skin, but I did not find this to be the case at all. I only used a small amount (but still covered the entire face), but this 100% mineral formula was amazing. I didn't anticipate it to keep me matte, but surprisingly it did. I think this will be a year round staple for me for sure.

5. Murad Essential-C Sun Balm Stick SPF 35 - Felicia of ThisThatBeauty turned me onto this initially. I had seen her singing its praises but the idea of a sunscreen stick just kept turning me off. But then (as is always the case) I caved and headed to Sephora to purchase. The texture took me some getting used to, but once I applied and smoothed it in with my fingers, it felt divine on the skin. Not sticky, not greasy - it felt better than most moisturizers to be honest. And makeup glided right on top without any issue. For the price point, ease and feel - this sunscreen is a no brainer, aka must-have for summer.

Hydration Is The Name Of The Winter Skin Game

Sound the alarm and dispatch the emergency personnel because this winter is not playing around with my skin. The main culprit for me though is dehydration.  I still get shiny in my t-zone no matter how cold or hot it is outside but I can often tell my skin is dehydrated just by how it feels and looks - dull and lackluster.  Lack of moisture is not just for those with dry skin - if I had to guess I would say that most people are quite dehydrated just from how we live our lives.  Adding hydrating products into my routine is always my first priority, even over anti-aging products.  Mainly because I find that keeping my skin full of moisture and water is the best anti-aging remedy out there (in my opinion of course, but it's my blog so my word goes. *stomps feet, pouts lips*)  I have quite a strong arsenal of products helping me fight the dehydration battle, from masks, to serums, to sprays, to cleansers and beyond.  Click on each product for more information.

1. Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist - Not a first time appearance on the blog, this Tatcha mist is a must have at home, on the go, or anywhere you may need a burst of hydration.  My favorite part of this is how evenly it sprays, leaving the skin subtly hydrated rather than drenched. It has a milky texture, so the soothing sensation it leaves is quite addictive.  As I have said before, it is a bit of a splurge, but I feel so worth it.
2. Murad Refreshing Cleanser (c/o) - While I leave it up to my cleansing oils to remove most of my heavy duty makeup, I have been following it with this Murad cleanser.  If you read my recent "How I Take Care Of My Skin" post, you know that I typically cleanse twice each night.  I fell instantly in love with this cleanser because it is both a foaming cleanser with a rich milky texture - AKA the best of both worlds.  I find it leaves me feeling clean, refreshed and nourished without any dryness or tightening which can be a feat in and of itself for a cleanser.
3. Dermalogica Active Moist (c/o) - If there is a skin issue, Dermalogica has a product designed to address it.  I find that while some lines are great for helping me treat certain issues, Dermalogica literally has a product for every ailment my skin may face.  I discovered this product on a whim when it was sent over with a few other products, and sadly I placed in the back of my beauty shelf only to forget about it for a few weeks.  When I dug back there one day and discovered it again, I slapped it on and was promptly speechless.  It is oil-free so it doesn't feel heavy on the skin, but it is like a drink of water for my face.  Hydration is immediate and whether I wear day or night, my skin never gets oily after.  Dermalogica wins again - hydration success!
4. Mario Badescu Herbal Hydrating Serum - Again, another product not new to my blog but one that needs to be mentioned over and over and over - and especially now that we are talking hydration.  Upon first feeling the texture of this serum, I was hesitant because of it's slightly honey-like feel rather than a typical water-like serum.  Then I applied it.  Welp, I was hooked.  It is the number one product I reach for when my skin is irritated, sensitive, worn out, been dragged through the mud, etc - because it helps to soothe absolutely any problem I have and balance my skin again.
5. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream Intense Hydration (c/o) - With a name like that, it's as if it was written for this post, yes?  Kiehl's has been a brand that I have used for years because of their simple but efficacious formulations, and as a long time user and lover of the Ultra Facial line, this new addition couldn't have come at a better time this winter.  While so many products help me to keep hydrated, I still suffer occasionally from those stubborn dry patches that come because mother nature is hell bent on making me suffer for not recycling enough or something.  I use it on those specific patches and have found it to be a miracle worker - stubborn dryness no more.
6. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Masque (c/o) - I mask nightly as we learned from this post.  So in addition to the new Ultra Facial Cream Intense, I am using this Kiehl's Ultra Facial Overnight hydrating mask once a week.  I often fear overnight masks due to the high mess potential, but since only a very thin layer is needed I find that I can manage it quite well.  It still gets on my pillow case slightly, but barely enough to notice and certainly not enough to persuade me not to keep using!  However, what is noticeable and extremely persuasive is my face the next morning - hello soft, supple, moisturized and calm skin.  Another winner in my book and again the reason why Kiehl's products will forever be in my routine.

How I Take Care Of My Skin

This one is going to be a long one folks so grab a snack and take a seat.  My skincare routine is probably the most asked about question I receive regularly on my blog and different social platforms.  It's no secret, I have quite the multi step regimen but after much trial and error, I have found some underlying principles and rules that keep my skin looking its best.  Now I preface this post by saying that I am not an expert, doctor, or esthetician - I am simply one girl (with oily skin) staring in the mirror asking her skin to be as good as it can be.  And while you can search my blog for tons of great specific product recommendations, this post will be an overall conceptual explanation for how I approach taking care of my skin.  My extensive routine may not be for everyone, but this is what works for me, so remember that you can adapt some of my experience to what works for you.  The kicker with my skincare system however, is my skin is constantly changing and will continue to change for the rest of my life.  So the trick is trying to treat what my skin needs now, rather than trying to find the perfect recipe that will last me forever.  This is a major reason why I don't use the exact same routine every single night.  If I am testing out a new product, I will usually add to my routine 4 nights/week, maybe 5 for at least 4 weeks to see effectiveness.  But my skin is never (ever) the same from day to day due to external factors (stress, weather, NYC, life in general), so using the exact same line up every night does not work for me.  I do however, try to balance out ingredients each night, trying not to overload my skin with too much of the same thing all at once.  For example when using an acid based cleanser and toner, I may finish up my routine with a soothing mask and hydrating moisturizer. Remember however, this is what works for me - and many of you may have differing opinions for your own skin.  That's cool.  Diverse skincare routines is what makes the world go round, baby.  I have now rambled way too long, so let's get into the good stuff.  Here is a look at some of my best practices for taking care of my skin, and after each category, I will list a few of my favorite products.  Click on each product link for more information.

1. Cleanse - I cannot cleanse enough.  And surprisingly I find that my skin does not dry out from my cleansing routine mainly because it's geared towards properly removing my makeup so not a single bit of residue remains.  I always begin with a face wipe of some kind to initially help me remove the first bit of my makeup.  Naturally it never gets everything off (eye makeup especially) so I always follow with a cleansing oil.  Cleansing oils are my holy grail products - and a huge key to how my skin stays looking so great.  Nothing breaks up makeup, dirt, grime and oil (eek, my face is disgusting, right?) like an oil based cleanser - and any amount of eye makeup I may be wearing comes off effortlessly.  Finally I finish with a third type of cleanser depending on what my skin needs that evening - perhaps an acne/glycolic wash or a gentle milk rinse to make my skin feel great but never stripped.
2. Tone - Why? What? Who? How? This is exactly how I felt about toning when I began my skincare journey.  And then I just dove in, did some research and tried out different types.  Voila - I am now in love with toners.  Typically, they are designed to remove any remaining traces of dirt/makeup, balance the pH of the skin and prepare the skin to receive the following treatments/serums/creams that will follow.  Since I have oily skin that is acne prone, I tend to gravitate towards ones to help me remove bacteria so I can prevent future breakouts.  But if my skin is particularly dry/irritated/sensitive that day due to who-knows-what, then I treat it accordingly.
3. Exfoliate - This step by far has made the most difference in my skin over the past two years - helping me achieve radiant and even-toned skin. I do love getting rid of those dead skin cells, but I read a great article a few months ago which mentioned too much exfoliation can have a negative effect.  Eureka! That was me - I was exfoliating in some form almost every night - and multiple times over.  It was a miracle I had any skin left.  So I began to really look at what was in the products I was using each night, and to make sure I was not overloading my skin with peels, scrubs and then acidic based ingredients in my products.  The two main types of traditional exfoliation I do regularly are chemical (peels) and manual (scrubs) - and I use each once a week, normally on Wednesday and Sunday nights.  The rest of the week I may have cleansers, toners, serums, creams with exfoliating properties, but traditional peels/scrubs I save for once each a week.
4. Mask - This step for me truly embodies the notion of treating what the skin needs when it needs it.  If my skin is dry that day - a hydrating mask.  If I have a breakout, a pore refining mask.  If my skin is dull, an exfoliating/refining mask.  And a great tip that I learned from a close beauty blogging friend is that you only have to mask the part of your face that needs it.  For example, the t-zone may need that clarifying clay mask, but the cheeks and forehead may be dry and need a hydrating mask.  Mix it up.  Don't layer the masks - just use them on the parts of the face that will benefit the most.
5. Eye cream - Many people feel that using their face cream around the eyes is a suitable treatment for this area.  Like I said before, I am no expert, but I do prefer to use a product designed for the eye area as I feel it may be more sensitive to the needs of that particular skin.  I liken it to using shampoo for your hair and shower gel for your body - while you can probably use one product for everything, you may not necessarily get the same results.
6. Serum - Often packed with a higher concentration of active ingredients, serums pack a serious punch when delivering results.  They are usually more potent than your typical face moisturizer and are best used under a day or night cream.  I have the least amount of serums in my arsenal mainly because they are the priciest of all skincare items, so I like to choose only a few that are effective for treating different conditions.  Hydration is a major concern for my skin, because while its oily, it can also be dehydrated - so a moisturizing serum is always in rotation.  I also love an exfoliating/retexturizing serum which really aids in brightening the skin and making it look refreshed.  Lastly,  I always need to have an acne treatment because I still break out after all these years - stupid hormones, ugh.
7. Moisturizer - My goodness - where to begin with this final category. This is probably the category I am the least loyal to because I am always trying something new.  With that being said, I again take the "treat what you need" approach to moisturizers.  If I am dry, irritated, red, broken out, dull, or feeling like I need a whole new face (kidding, but there are those days), I will reach for the cream to address the concern.  Yes I have a few favorites that I can't live without, but for me, this category is forever just trial and error.  You win some moisturizers, you lose some moisturizers.
So there you have it folks - a more thoughtful approach as to the "whys" behind how I take care of my skin.  I feel that understanding this concept is more empowering than the products themselves.  Now that I know how to give my skin what it needs when it needs it, I feel more comfortable navigating all the trials and tribulations that my skin will go through over the years.  Let my future wrinkles be warned.

Beauty Bits: Acne Fighting Products

photo Acneproducts.jpg Acne and breakouts are something that I have struggled with since I was a teenager.  On the spectrum, I know my case is rather mild, but my skin can really act up when it wants to.  Over the years, my breakouts have now limited themselves to my chin and jaw area which I know primarily hormonal, but it doesn't make it any more fun to deal with. Taking better care of my skin over the past few years has dramatically helped reduce my breakouts, however I have isolated a few certain products I have come across along the way that stand out from the rest in helping me keep my skin in check.  Mario Badescu products have been some of the best I have ever used in maintaining my clear skin, but there have been a few others that I have come across recently that were quite exceptional and needed to be added to this list.  Here is a look at some of my favorite acne fighting products:

1. Mario Badescu Special Cucumber Lotion - This toner can be quite strong so I recommend using sparingly, but it is great at disinfecting the skin and helping to reduce bacteria.  I apply after I have cleansed and before I begin applying any serums or moisturizers.  I made the mistake of letting this run out without a back up, and my skin freaked out.  Lesson learned.
2. Dermalogica Precleanse Wipes - I am quite the facial wipe connoisseur, and while most seem to do a suitable job, these stood out immediately to me.  Much like their Precleanse product, these wipes help to break out oil, makeup, dirt and grime so easily allowing for a more thorough cleanse after.  I find that half the battle in fighting acne is to properly cleanse the skin and remove all the yucky stuff (technical term) that contributes to clogging pores and irritating the skin.
3. Mario Badescu Drying Lotion - Yes, it pained me just to turn this bottle on its side for the picture since they give you strict instructions NOT to ever shake the bottle.  Leave the contents upright and simply dab a q-tip into the sediment at the bottom and dab on the blemish.  I typically use this only on whiteheads (ugh, I know - it's even gross to say) to help shrink and reduce the inflammation.  It's pretty powerful stuff so just a dab will do ya.
4. Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion - Included in my 2013 Beauty Favorites, I am never without this product.  If I travel, this is the first thing I throw in my bag.  Technically designed to treat cystic acne (which I often suffer from), this is best applied at night to help soothe the skin and reduce the breakout.  Now I will stress that often (any of) these products take time to heal a blemish (or blemishes - plural, ugh) so patience is a must but the process moves a lot faster with these in my arsenal.  But a little tip from me to you when using this gem, I often apply it under my makeup to help the blemish heal during the day and find that it works wonders.
5. Mario Badescu Drying Cream - This product is new to me, but I instantly fell in love.  And while I go rogue and use the Buffering Lotion under my makeup occasionally, this is actually designed to help conceal, treat blemishes and be worn under makeup.  Great at drying up small under the surface bumps and blemishes, I am not sure how I ever lived without it before.  Seriously, the more you know.....
6. Mario Badescu Silver Powder - What the heck is this stuff? - my thoughts the first time I used it.  I read the instructions and it said to dab a wet cotton ball into the dry powder mixture and apply to any areas with blackheads.  But all skepticism went away when I removed the powder after 10 minutes (use a cotton pad soaked in toner), and my pores looked squeaky clean!  The powder is designed to help unclog (again, gross I know, but the truth) congested pores and absorb any excess oil.  But a slight word of caution, if you walk by an open window or fan with this stuff on your face, be prepared for a dust storm.
7. REN Invisible Pores Detox Mask - While most of these products help to address the blemishes themselves, this mask is great because it treats my entire face.  It helps to purify the skin, remove dirt and impurities and I love the way my skin feels after.  Some pore-cleansing masks can leave my skin dry, tight and uncomfortable, but this is just the opposite.  Once I remove, my skin looks smoother, softer and most importantly still feels hydrated.

A Bit Obsessed: Best Of Beauty 2013

photo b2bff0fe-274f-4ad0-bd0c-2f229e2e9cd3.jpg Another day, another list of beauty favorites, right? Well not exactly - these are THE best products that I have used in the past 365 days.  For something to keep my attention that long is quite a feat, and for many of these products, it was love at first use.  Skincare, makeup and fragrance - these are the items that rocked my world this past year.  But a little word of caution before you read the list - I am not responsible for the buying spree that may result at the end of this post.  I am simply the beauty messenger.  Got it?  Good.  Let's get started:
 photo 70dcd6cd-77c7-44b6-afe4-e85689f54d5b.jpg
1. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light - So much hype for a product, yet is it worth it?  Most definitely yes, yes, yes. This particular one I use on my cheeks and hair line to give me a "lit from within" glow to my complexion.  Frankly it's a miracle I have not bought every single shade - but there is always 2014 for that.
2. Le Metier de Beaute Classic Finish Flawless Foundation -  What's in a name? Everything when it comes to this foundation.  Flawless finish is exactly how this looks on the skin - with buildable coverage and a natural finish that keeps my skin matte and perfect all day long.
3. Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation - I oscillate between this and my Le Metier for best foundation, but I simply can't choose.  This is designed to deliver a high definition finish and it does.  Perfect for pictures and perfect for daily wear.  And no matter how many other layers I put on top (powder, finishing powder, blush, highlighter), it blends perfectly.
4. Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Mascara - Is it possible to pick one mascara that rocked my world this entire year?  Yes it is.  It was hard but this formula really made quite an impression on me....and my lashes.  A thick, voluminous, lengthy and perfectly separate lash look sums it up.
5. Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick in Pepper - It's not only the color that I loved with this lipstick, it was the formulation, the packaging - the entire brand.  This and the next color have taken up permanent residence in my makeup bag, and it's only a matter of time before the entire line takes over my makeup vanity.
6. Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick in Fig - The perfect natural pink lip in a tube.  See swatches here and decide for yourself (though I'm sure you will agree).
7. Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil in Soft Brunette -I have said it before and I will say it again - how a brow pencil made it to my yearly favorites is beyond me, but when something is good, it is GOOD.  Texture, application, color - everything with this product is perfection.  My brows have never, and I mean never looked better.
 photo 9c0bc3b5-9277-4b47-8d54-261646c087c4.jpg
8. Nest Fragrances in Midnight Fleur - If there was just one fragrance I wanted to smell like forever and ever, it would be this.  So unique, rich, warm and quite the conversation piece I may add.  Almost every single time I am wearing it, I get compliments and questions asking me about the scent.  I am almost hesitant to tell them for fear everyone will begin wearing it, but then I realize that if I walked around and smelled nothing but Midnight Fleur on everyone, it would be a perfect world.

9. Dermalogica Oil Free Matte SPF 30 Lotion - Best darn daily moisturizer for my oily skin.  Hydrates, keeps me matte, wears well under makeup - do you need it?  Yes you do.
10. Dermalogica Multi Power Recovery Masque - Not sure how I lasted this long in my life without this masque.  THIS. MASQUE.  The short version is this stuff makes my skin instantly perfect.  The long version is it uses powerful concentrated vitamins to help erase any signs of damage to the skin.  Either way, buy it now and thank me later.
11. Mario Badescu Buffering Lotion - Let's face the facts, no matter how well I treat my skin, I will forever break out.  I have quite oily skin and my hormones like to go off on tangents without my prior approval.  Thus resulting in nasty blemishes that must be stopped.  Enter this Buffering Lotion.  Under makeup or alone, I simply cannot live without it.  It is the only thing that helps me treat the blemish fast and without completely drying out my skin.
12. Perricone MD Blue Plasma - In all fairness I discovered this product last year, but I used it so much this year I had to include it.  My glow, even skin tone and smooth texture can be credited to this daily peel that helps to chemically exfoliate the skin without ever irritating it.  It is so good, I am giving one away.  Yup, you are welcome.
13. Perricone MD Blue Plasma Orbital - All the amazingness from the face version, but for the eye.  Project 'stay looking young forever' is in full effect.
14. Tatcha Deep Rice Enzyme Powder - Again a product I have been using for a long time, but I had to include in this year's favorites.  Add water and this powder exfoliant turns to a soft paste-like cleanser that gives an effective, yet surprisingly gentle exfoliation.  I always have a back up. Always.
15. Neal's Yard Remedies Beauty Sleep Concentrate - The name threw me off initially and I was not sure what to expect, but this cult-classic (google it and you will see exactly how crazy people are about this product) has become the best thing to help my skin rejuvenate as I sleep.  I don't know if it's the aromatic scent or the immediate calming effect it has on my skin, but this product has become a holy grail night moisturizer for me.

Beauty Bits: Masks I Use To Hydrate, Soothe And Recharge My Skin

 photo 9cf399fd-f498-46bd-959e-3f37983cb256.jpg

“A mask a day keeps the lines away” is one of my many skincare mottos I try to live by.  Now I do have a ton of different masks that target different issues, but the category I enjoy the most is my hydrating, soothing and recharging masks.  Typically these are masks that I use to give my skin a boost when it is looking dull, tired, dry or irritated – basically when I want a real pampering session.  I am always on the hunt for new ones in this category so feel free to leave me a suggestion below or tweet me @alittlebitetc and let me know some of your favorites.  But for now, let’s talk my picks:

1. NARS Aqua Gel Luminous Mask – I am all over the NARS makeup, but this was actually my first foray into the skincare.  And I was thoroughly impressed.  The name is spot on with how the product both looks in texture and the results you get after using.  A hybrid between a gel and cream, this mask is like an intense drink of water for my skin.  Suitable for any season because being hydrated is necessary 24/7/365, right? Right.
2. Dermalogica MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque (c/o)  – Again as with the previous mask, this product is aptly named, though I think they left out a word – “MAGIC”.  This mask is AH-MAY-ZING.  Full disclosure: I had this product sitting in my medicine cabinet hidden behind some other products (it’s possible, my cabinet is stuffed. Evidence here), and had overlooked it for months.  Then one day, I finished the product in front of it and came face to face again, and I decided to give it a whirl, and have not looked back since.  Packed with a multitude of vitamins A,C, E and F, this gave me as close to perfect skin as possible after use.  My skin was smooth, hydrated, even toned and felt better than it had in a long time.  I now call it my ‘secret weapon’ mask and use it when I need a quick fix.  And it delivers every time.
3.  Mario Badescu Calma Mask – I feel peaceful just saying it’s name – Calma Mask.  And that is just what it does – calms my skin the heck down.  I find that especially when my skin is acting out hormonally and I am desperately trying to treat it with numerous acne products, I pull this out to help give my skin a much needed break.  I often use it to balance my skin AFTER I have used an acne/drying mask, and find my breakouts clear up much faster.  A blemish free Maree is a happier Maree.
4.  Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask – This mask was my summer time BFF after being out in the sun or needed a momentary cool down to a long day in the heat.  I would pop it in the refrigerator for a few minutes before and then slather on as necessary.  Instantly refreshing and soothing, it’s like a spa in a jar.  Now that the weather temps have dropped (I miss you, summer), I find that this is still so helpful to my skin a few times a week, and depending on the week, sometimes daily.  Soothe, refresh, repeat.

Beauty Bits: Body Products For Winter Skin

photo BodyProductsforwinterskin.jpg I may be oily as can be on my face but the rest of my skin tends to be dry, flaky, pale and just plain ick. During the summer months, obviously it is not as bad because of the humidity and heat, but I still need to my skin well hydrated.  But in the winter months, my skin takes a huge push into alligator territory - dry and scaly - double ICK!  There are even some days where it hurts after a particularly cold walk home - so having products that can moisturize and hydrate immediately are of the utmost importance.   I need relief NOW.  This winter these products have been saving my poor skin already (and the cold hasn't even begun yet in NYC):

1. Kiehl's Creme de Corps Nurturing Body Wash Cream - Nothing is more luxurious than lathering up with a thick, creamy body wash as the Kiehl's Creme de Corps line has been a favorite for years.  I even put a little in my bath and soak in it to help soothe my skin when it feels extra dry.  A winter doesn't pass that I don't have it in my shower.
2. Dermalogica Exfoliating Body Scrub (c/o) - I exfoliate A LOT in the summer (I love a good shiny leg), but I still keep the scrubs around when the temps drop.  I typically use this once a week, and while it gives a good scrub, I love the gentle foam that develops as I am scrub-a-dubbing.  It helps to take away all that dead, dull winter skin while still helping to calm it.
3. Kiehl's Creme de Corps Limited Edition "Grapefruit" Whipped Body Butter (c/o) - Hello, decadence.  I mean, there is the actual word 'butter' in the name - so you know this stuff is the real deal.  First of all, the original Creme de Corps Body Lotion has always been my holy grail - and is the most hydrating yet absorbent lotion of all time.  And then Kiehl's had to kick it up a notch and blow my mind with the whipped body butter.  I left the top open in the picture to tease you a bit - can you even with that texture??  And now for the holidays, they have made a limited edition Grapefruit scent, with 100% of net profits going to the Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry Campaign.  You can hydrate, have perfectly silky skin and give back.  Does it get better than that?
4. Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse (c/o) - As you all probably know, I am never one to run from a body or face oil - I just love them!  And this cult classic certainly lives up to the hype.  A dry oil that absorbs immediately leaving the skin soft, supple and with a healthy shine.  But don't let this one application stop you, it can be used on your hair, face (apply before foundation for a subtle glow) and a few drops in the bath for a milky emulsion in which you can soak yourself all night.
