Review: Hourglass Ambient Strobe Powders + Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kits with Swatches on Fair Skin

Strobing or highlighting or whatever new name they will come up with next - there is no shortage of powders these days to add a shine, shimmer or glow to the skin. As someone with oily skin, I used to shy away from anything that would add additional shine for fear I would end up looking like a greasy disco ball. But as I have said before, the formulations of highlighters nowadays is light years ahead of what it was even a few years ago. There are a ton that I use and love (read back on a few of my faves here), but recently these two have gotten a ton of buzz. The new Hourglass Ambient Strobe powders are a further addition to the ever popular (and personal favorite) Ambient Lighting powder range, and the new Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kits offer intense shimmer powders in one easy to travel-with compact.

1. Hourglass Ambient Strobe Powders - As with so many Hourglass products that launch, there is a ton of buzz followed by a wide range of opinions on their performance. I've said before that I drink the Hourglass Kool-Aid, but that doesn't mean I blindly like anything they produce. I can definitely understand why many people had differing thoughts on these powders since they deliver such soft and understated results. I do think that for those that want a strong and intense strobe or highlight, these will not be for you. As you can see from my below swatches, they are a sheer powder with just a hint of color. It was not sunny this day so you can't see the shimmer, but it is definitely there. There is slight glitter, but for me it was understated and blended into my skin right away. Incandescent is my favorite shade and gives the most subtle highlight that I can wear daily, while Brilliant provided the strongest contrast. Iridescent and Euphoric looked a tad more bronzy on my skintone and if I was wearing the right matte foundation and primer, looked beautiful dusted on the cheeks and cheekbones. The formula and texture of the powder is what I have come to know and love from Hourglass - it's finely milled and looks undetectable on the skin. These are a win in my book, but I don't think it's necessary to buy all 4. I would recommend (if you prefer a more subtle strobe) picking out your favorite shade or two to add to your collection. But then again, if you hoard makeup like myself, just go ahead and purchase all 4 because you know you want to. Ha!

2. Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit in Gleam - Anastasia Beverly Hills has quickly become one of those brands that has the pigmentation and quality to qualify as a makeup artist brand first and foremost. But yet the colors and performance of the products make it desirable to the masses who want to wear the products for everyday. However, there is nothing subtle about the brand and that is again the case with these Glow Kits - high watt shine in the most stunning shades of bronze, rose-gold and champagne. These are a makeup artist's dream and a kit must-have for photo shoots since they will give an unforgettable highlight. To adapt them for everyday may be a bit harder since the pay-off is so intense, however as someone who has mastered the light-handed technique I can make almost anything work for any occasion. Mimosa and Starburst looked stunning dusted on the cheeks themselves, while Crushed Pearl gave me cheekbones like never before. Hard Candy was the most unique shade of them all and became one of my favorite colors to wear on my eyes. Whoops. Frankly no one ever said the products had to be used exclusively for the cheeks, so I went rogue and used them on the eyes. It has a duochrome effect that I love as a single wash of color to the lids. I do think, as with almost the entire Anastasia range, this glow kit can be used on most if not all skin tones. The warm undertones of each shade make it appealing to so many and if you are looking for a highlighter that packs a serious glowy punch, then I advise you to pick this up immediately. You will find yourself mixing the colors to create your own shades which is half the fun of wearing makeup, amiright?

Summer Launches From Guerlain, NARS And Hourglass

Get ready for all the bronzers and all the colors as the summer beauty collections begin launching. Shimmer on the eyes, glistening cheeks and bold lips - I can hardly wait! And even though many of us may not be fans of the sun (SPF 50 gals raise your hand!), we can still enjoy the typical easy and relaxed summer look. Here is a peek at some new summer launches from NARS, Guerlain and Hourglass. 

1. NARS Gloss in Nebulous and Nucleus - This new collaboration with Christopher Kane is what NARS fans live for. Bold and daring pieces make for a fun and almost theatrical collection. While the cheek and eye colors are a bit more playful, the lip glosses are super wearable! Though they seem bold in the tube, they have this jelly-like finish that makes them sheer and easy to wear. I instantly thought I would love Nucleus being that it's a basic fleshy nude, but I actually ended up wearing Nebulous more day to day. It turns into the most flattering juicy peach color perfect for the summer.

2. NARS Eyeshadow in Outer Limits - Glitter fans listen up! This shadow is right up your alley. It's a chunky rose-gold formula that when layered over a cream shadow or emollient base turns into a bold metallic eye look. For me, this is definitely an evening shadow, but one that can look stunning with glowing skin and a fluorescent lip. 

3. Guerlain My Terracotta Bronzing Powder in Natural Blondes - If there is one thing Guerlain knows how to do, it's bronzers. Rarely does a brand succeed at making bronzers for all different skin tones, yet Guerlain has over and over again. Their newest bronzer launch is more matte and strongly pigmented. I only need a very light hand in order to cover my cheeks, but the result is so natural. While many bronzers can skew too orange, Guerlain always manages to make ones that resemble exactly how you look after a day in the sun. Rich, golden and radiant without being too muddy, too brown, too orange or too dull. There is little to no shimmer in this one which I appreciate and find that the formula and color only solidifies Guerlain as the bronzer experts.

4. Guerlain Waterproof Cream Eyeshadow in Blue Ocean - I know, I know - aqua eye shadow??!! On me?!!! But if there is ever a time to experiment with color, it's the summer. I've only tested this out around the house since I'm waiting to wear it with a full on beachy look, but it's just as  you would suspect - creamy and smooth with just the perfect amount of shine. My perfect look with this would be fresh skin, bronzed cheeks and a peachy, glossy lip so as not to compete with the lid color. Hmmmm....I see a tutorial in the works perhaps.....

5. Guerlain Rouge Automatique in Fluo Stiletto - Wallflowers and those wishing not to stand out need avoid this color at all costs. This fluorescent pink is for the sassy and bold for sure - and I L-O-V-E it! I'm not even sure you need any additional makeup with this lip since it takes all the attention, but maybe a dramatic lash and highlighted cheekbones would be suitable. The formula is not as opaque as you might suspect and I applied the below swatch 4-5 times to get it to look like that, but with such a bold color it's nice to have the option to tone it down if I want.

6. Hourglass Ambient Bronzer in Luminous Bronze Light - Is there a more anticipated bronzer launch of the spring? Nope. The Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders are my holy grail finishing powders (I live for Dim Light), and the blushes knocked my socks off so naturally I was ecstatic to finally get this on my cheeks. As with the other ambient light range, it feel incredibly smooth to the touch, applies effortlessly and gives a gorgeous "lit from within" glow that has become synonymous with the entire range. It definitely has some radiance to it, so I prefer it over a matte finish foundation (I have oily skin) or over a radiant foundation that I have set with a bit of powder. But regardless, it has been in my makeup routine almost daily since it arrived. My love affair with Hourglass continues.....

There are so many exciting summer launches already out, and a ton more to come. I think I may pull the trigger on some Tom Ford, Chanel and Dior pieces.

Skincare With Advanced Technology

Though I have quite an extensive skincare routine that I go through each morning and night, I really do appreciate those products that can do it all and can target a ton of different concerns all at once. Typically I just focus on my most pressing concern at the time (dehydration, dark spots, uneven texture, etc) in order to determine what treatment I will use to address it. But with all the technological advancements being made in the beauty industry, many of the products that are coming out have the ability to address a multitude of different concerns all at once. Over the past few months, I have been testing out two new serums that fall into that "do it all" category and made enough of an impact on me that I had to write about them. 

1. Hourglass Equilibrium Biomimetic Skin Active Serum - Hourglass is a brand never without a buzz. Their products are unique, aesthetically beautiful to look at and deliver some of the best finishes and results out there. I personally have been an Hourglass fan for a long time, and it's the one brand that I have the most of in my makeup collection. So when I heard rumors of a skincare launch, I was excited. No, like really really excited. Lol.  

I was a bit surprised to see that they entered into the market with such an high price point for their first serum, since many of their color products are a splurge but not exorbitant like Chanel or Tom Ford. But  I do know that a ton of research and development is put into each launch so I figured their move into the skincare arena would be big and impactful. 

The Equilibrium Biomimetic Skin Active Serum is designed to be a rebalancing treatment that helps to counteract the signs of aging. A huge feature of this product is the technique used to create the serum, called ultrasonication which produces microscopic droplets that allow the ingredients to penetrate even further into the skin. The serum does have quite a thick texture so I actually prefer to use it alone without moisturizer. It's recommended to use the serum for 45-50 days to allow for a full cell turnover on the face, and I can definitely say that it does take time for significant results to develop. That being said, I did begin to notice how balanced my skin was after just 10 days. The afternoon oil slick that I normally suffer from became less and less. Following the 2.5 week mark was when I began to see how bright my skin looked - like 'after a good facial peel' kind of bright. After a month my skin began to look consistently good day after day - even toned, supple, smooth, bright - the whole nine yards.  Overall, I was extremely happy with the results and am still using it almost nightly. I do think, however, that this is definitely an investment and will appeal to the more luxury skincare lover that regularly buys La Prairie, Sisley, SK-II, etc and is intrigued by new innovation. It's not yet available countrywide yet, so if you are interested in trying one out or sampling - it's available at the Hourglass boutique in Los Angeles and Bergdorf Goodman in NYC. 

2. Lancome Visionnaire Advanced Skin Corrector - This is the first skincare product that I have actually used from Lancome (with the exception of their eye makeup remover - it's awesome), and I was not sure what to expect. I have heard great things about their skincare line, but until I see things for myself I can't go just on hype. Well, if this new Visionnaire serum is any indication of the rest of the line, then I am kicking myself I didn't jump on this bandwagon sooner. The new Visionnaire serum is designed to be an advanced skin corrector that helps refine skin texture, make pores less visible and target fine lines.

One of the first things to stand out to me while using this serum is how quickly I saw results. Serums always take the longest on me to show results (like the Hourglass has), but this was making a difference in just a few days. Though I take good care of my skin regularly, it still has it's days where it's acting up and not at its best (typically hormone related), and sure enough I was experiencing this while testing out the Visionnaire. So after 3 days of using it, I could see a marked difference in how smooth my skin felt and how calm my skin was despite the awful weather we are having here in NYC. After 3+ weeks. the dark spot I had on my chin from a prior cystic blemish was virtually gone. My skin really loves this stuff and each time I apply it, it soaks in immediately and my skin looks so even and healthy almost immediately after. I do like to layer it however, and still prefer to apply a moisturizer on top rather than just use this alone like I do with the Hourglass serum. All in all, I can see why people are such die-hard loyal fans of Lancome skincare - and why some of their products have achieved cult classic status.

2 New Eyeshadow Palettes That I'm Loving Right Now

I have patiently been anticipating these two palettes for a while now. The Hourglass one for many months and the NARS one for a few weeks. Now that I have them both in my possession - I could not wait to share my review of them with you. The Hourglass one has been debated all around for it's performance and texture, and I will address both of those with you in my post below. But first, let's start with the NARS Dual Intensity Palette review, shall we?

1. NARS Dual Intensity Palette - While I was quite enamored with the original launch of the NARS Dual Intensity shadows late last year, I was not moved enough to purchase any of them. Odd I know, but sometimes I am excited for a launch but for some reason or another, I don't end up purchasing the product. However, as soon as I saw the first few sneak peeks of this palette, I knew I would need it. And it thankfully combines all the shades from the individual shadows that I was interested in from the first release. As you can see from below, the texture is creamy, smooth and applies evenly with a nice sheen rather than intense shimmer/sparkle. I am absolutely in love with this palette and think I will get a ton of use out of it both on a daily basis and even for travel. There is a great flat eye shadow brush that comes in the palette and a huge mirror which makes it perfect for traveling and any touch ups that may be needed. The blue was the only shade that made me a bit hesitant, but after swatching it, I found that it was much more muted and wearable than anticipated. I see a smokey sapphire eye in my future very soon.

2. Hourglass Modernist Palette in Monochrome - To say there has been a buzz around this palette is an understatement. And now that they are finally here, the reviews are majorly divided. Some love it, some do not - but I have been testing it out for a few weeks and am on the "love" team. Majorly love it. Yes, it is quite powdery when used - as evidenced by my picture below. As soon as a brush hits the palette, powder goes everywhere and it seems quite delicate.

However, though it is quite powdery in the pan, I found NO fall out when applied to my eyes. And frankly, the only thing that matters to me is how it performs on my lids. The texture is so buttery soft that it almost feels like a cream, which is probably why it creates so much dust when a brush touches it. But that smoothness that can be messy in the pan is what makes this shadow such a joy to blend. I find that the colors literally melt into one another on the lid and created an intense yet soft look. The pigmentation falls right in the middle of the intensity spectrum for me and I enjoy that. It is enough to really create a striking look on the eye, but not strong enough that I need to spend 20 minutes trying to blend it out to an appropriate day look.

Overall, I think the palette is absolutely stunning - both in aesthetics and performance. I already have my eye on picking up one or two more because they have impressed me so much.

My Current Face Brushes/Tools

Ever since I learned how to do my own makeup, I've been a brush gal. I rarely if ever use my fingers or sponges (except for one which we will talk about) and find that I always get a better finish with a good makeup brush. I already did a post on my favorite eye shadow brushes (read that here), so it only made sense to follow that up with a post on my most used brushes for foundation, powder and blush. (Brushes listed below are in order from left to right in the next picture)

1. NARS Yachiyo Brush - This is a new brush for me and yes, I fell victim to all the hype surrounding it. Truth be told, I was not a fan when I first used it. It was too tapered, too small and didn't blend well on my skin. Fast forward a few months and a lot of use later, and it has finally become a staple in my makeup routine. The bristles began to open up a bit more and the shape was a bit less tapered which made it great for contouring my cheeks and applying highlighter.

2. MAC #129 Brush - This brush has been in my collection for more than 10 years, so that should tell you how important it is to invest in good brushes. It is still in great condition (minor wear and tear) and I suspect it will last me another 10 years. Because it is a slightly more voluminous brush, I like to use this when applying blushes and bronzer with minimal pigmentation. I find that more tapered brushes give me better control with intensely pigmented products, and fluffier brushes are best with blushes that don't need a precise application.

3. Real Techniques Stippling Brush -  Perfect for foundation, cream highlighters  and blush, this duo fibre Real Techniques brush has been a favorite for a long time. It's very affordable while still maintaining superior quality. This brush can leave brush strokes on occasion so I do have to ensure I use it with thicker foundation and/or blush formulas. 

4. Sephora Pro Airbrush #55 - This is the newest member of my foundation brush collection and was purchased purely off reviews and fellow blogger buzz. People were raving about its ability to create a true airbrushed finish, so I had to see for myself. Happily, all of the reviews were right - it is quite a unique brush. Because the hair is a bit longer, the brush moves a lot during the application which gives it the ability to create a smooth finish on the face. The only challenge I have is because it's not dense and stiff, I have a harder time getting an even application around my nose. I usually just grab one of my Real Techniques brushes to help finish the job and it works perfectly. Other than that one aspect, I truly love the finish this brush gives to my skin.

5. Giorgio Armani Blender Brush - When I need a more precise application for my foundation or cream blush/highlighter, I like using a stiff synthetic brush like this one from Armani. It gives me more control and instead of swiping it up and down my skin, I tend to use a stippling or patting motion to get the desired result. Especially with heavily pigmented cream blushes, this brush allows for a gorgeous sheer wash of color.

6. Hourglass Blush Brush - If my Sephora Pro Airbrush, my MAC #129 brush and my Real Techniques brushes had a baby, it would be this Hourglass Blush Brush. It a nice combination of stiff yet fluffy with a nice rounded tip that allows for precise application or a nice dusting over the face. I have used it for liquid foundation and love the finish it gives, but prefer it for powder blush. It's not wide enough or large enough for bronzer in my opinion and not precise enough for highlighter - it falls right in the middle and works great for those neutral blush colors I wear on a regular basis.

7. Real Techniques Contour Brush - This is exclusively my concealer brush. I know it can probably be used for a myriad of products, but I love the shape for my under eye area. It fits perfectly and helps to blend out my concealer beautifully. I learned to use a fluffier brush under the eyes many years ago to achieve a more airbrushed and blended finish and have never stopped using that the technique.

8. MAC #150 Brush - While I typically use a powder puff (I love this one) to press my loose setting powders into my skin, I still love a large powder brush for dusting on finishing powders and/or bronzers. This MAC brush has been a staple in my collection for 10+ years and it always gets the job done with minimal shedding. 

9. Bobbi Brown Blush Brush - This is my first Bobbi Brown brush and I was quite impressed with how well it has performed. I like to use the side of the brush more than the tip simply because I find it does a better job at blending out highly pigmented blushes into a wearable flush of color on the cheeks. It may be my first BB brush, but after using it almost every day for the past few months, it certainly won't be my last.

10. MAC #116 Brush - While many may find the smaller shape of this brush to be perfect for contouring, I use this brush specifically for highlighting. The flat sides of the brush allow for me to tap the highlighter onto my cheek bones and then buff it into the skin for a beautiful finish. In a pinch, however, it does work as a nice eyeshadow blender/crease brush because of it's slightly tapered shape. 

11. Real Techniques Buffing Brush - If I had to pick a favorite brush out of my entire collection for applying foundation, this would be it. It is dense enough to give even coverage and fluffy enough to ensure the foundation is blended out well. It's the first brush I grab when I am going on vacation because I know I will get a gorgeous application every single time.

12. Shu Uemura Natural Brush 18R Red - I initially thought this powder brush would be great at applying loose powder or finishing powders, I quickly found that the tapered shape would make this more invaluable than I anticipated. When I want a contour that is less defined and precise, I reach for this brush every time. I specifically love it when applying bronzer around my hairline and across my cheekbones because the shape of the brush allows the product to be dispersed in a larger area while still ensuring you can keep some definition with the placement. 

13. Beautyblender - Though I am super late to the party, I am finally here. I have heard people rave about the power of the Beautyblender for years, yet I was not convinced. I tried the white one initially and was not pleased. It streaked and left my skin with an uneven application every time. But people kept telling me that the pink one would change my life - and they were right. Since the Beautyblender is best used wet, I find that it gives a beautiful dewy finish to whatever foundation I am using. I do adore the look of my skin after using it, but I always need to use a mattifying setting powder on top to help balance out the radiant finish. I thought this would deter me a bit, but surprisingly it hasn't and I reach for my Beautyblender all the time. As suggested, I use a swiping and bouncing motion to apply foundation and love that it leaves no streaks or splotchy spots on my skin. I didn't think I would ever say it, but I am now drinking the Beautyblender Kool-Aid.

Two New Brushes

The right makeup brush can make all the difference. I picked both of these up during my recent trip home and I have not gone a single day since without using them. Frankly, I wondered how I've been doing my makeup all along without either one.

1. Hourglass Foundation/Blush Brush No. 2 -I typically like my blush brushes with shorter bristles, but I found this a welcome change. The longer bristles enabled me to get more of a buffing action going when applying my blush. I find it performs exceptionally when used with cream blush and even liquid or cream foundation. The rounded top fits perfectly on the cheekbone and is great for sculpting the face by contouring or applying blush directly onto the cheeks or apples. Typically all my blush brushes are natural hair, but I found the synthetic hair of this brush to be great for picking up just the right amount of product and evenly dispersing it on the skin. I am already a fan of the Hourglass makeup line and this purchase only confirms my suspicions....they are one of the best makeup brands out there today.

2. Sephora Pro Airbrush #55 - This brush has been on my 'must-buy' list for months now. After hearing so many bloggers praise it and reading all the stellar reviews, I had to see what all the buzz was about. After just feeling the brush in the store, I already knew how it would perform. The bristles are incredibly soft and act like an actual airbrush machine to apply the foundation on in the smoothest way. Now that being said, I did find that the only place I had a difficult time using it was around the corners of my nose. For that, I pull out my Real Techniques Buffing Brush which has shorter and stiffer bristles better for cover my pores and blending the foundation in seamlessly. But I don't want that to deter you from the idea that this brush is still UNBELIEVABLE. And this may be a big statement, but it truly has trumped any of my foundation brushes I currently have in my collection. It manages to strike a fine balance between applying foundation so that it looks like second skin but still allowing the coverage of the makeup to come through. It is by far one of the most unique brushes I have ever owned and I am already contemplating buying a back up.

The Lipstick Edit

I'm forever trying new lipsticks, but if I had to narrow down my collection and pick my favorite shades from each category, these would be it. Here is my lipstick edit: 

Nudes: 

1. Aerin Rose Balm Lipstick in Pretty - One of the most perfect natural lip colors with a fantastic texture to match.

2. Marc Jacobs Lip Gel in Roleplay- A bit deeper than my regular lips, this works great with neutral eyes and cheeks for a great everyday look.

Corals: 

3. Aerin Rose Balm Lipstick in Coral Sand - I am not typically a fan of light coral shades, but this one manages to make the cut - probably because it has a bit more of a brown undertone to help balance out the orange.

Pinks:

4. Hourglass Opaque Liquid Lipstick in Canvas - I have been wearing this shade for years and it never lets me down. And it is the one color that I always bring with me on vacation - that is probably the biggest compliment a lip color can get.

 

5. Marc Jacobs Lip Vinyl in Paint It - A raspberry shade that works with just about any look.

Reds:

6. MAC Ladybug - The one red shade that I find perfect for wearing to the office as well as to dinner. Sheer and buildable, this color would work for almost any skin tone.

7. Armani Rouge Ecstasy in 400 - Everyone is always looking for that "perfect red", and this is mine. Not too orange, not too blue, it is the essential classic red lipstick everyone needs.

Dark lip shades: 

8. Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense in Envoutante - I was a bit hesitant to dive into the world of vampy lip shades, but this one helped me ease my way in. A great texture and not too dark for my pale skin. My fall wardrobe is not complete without this shade.

A Few Of My Favorite Matte Products

I have a confession. I used to be a HUGE shimmer fan. Shimmer on the eyes, cheeks, lips, face, body, you name it, I wanted it to sparkle. The shift began a few years ago, when I looked at one of my matte eye shadows and realized how beautifully it wore. Slowly, this turned into blushes, lipsticks, foundations, etc and now I have quite a strong collection of matte products in my makeup routine. Here are a few of my favorite matte products that still manage to make the skin look beautiful and radiant, without the shine.

1. Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15*- The first time I used this, I did not like the texture. It felt thick and heavy in my hands, and I did NOT want to put it on my face. But I did. And just as many of the reviews had said, it absorbed into the skin immediately. So I wore it for the entire day, and that is when I was convinced of its magical mattifying powers. My skin did not shine once during that day! It is currently housed in the holy grail section of my medicine cabinet.

2. Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation - So many liquid powder foundations out there, yet so few will ever rival Hourglass. It still is the standard for mattifying foundations that I hold everything up against. Consistently in so many beauty lovers' favorites, I can see this being one of the few foundations I ever repurchase.

3. By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra Powder*- For the past 6+ months, I have been going along, having my casual and quiet love affair with La Mer translucent loose powder. Minding my own business and enjoying it's beautiful, velvety finish and ability to make pores seemingly disappear from my face. The only down side, however is that it does have a slight color so it often oxides on me when I'm wearing certain foundations. Enter By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra Powder. Mind. Blown. This stuff is amazing. I repeat, this stuff is amazing. The first time I used, I actually said after 10 hours of wear on my face, "this powder is almost TOO matte". Can you believe that? But I used a tad less the second time and it was perfect. When I tell you that I put on my makeup at 7:45am and sometimes don't take it off until 9pm, and I am still matte, I know you may find it hard to believe. So did I until I saw it. And the best part for me is that because it is a white, translucent powder, it does not make any of my foundations oxidize. In fact, it can make me appear paler if applied too heavy, so that's my tip to you. Apply sparingly, but nonetheless APPLY THIS POWDER.

4. Bobbi Brown Creamy Matte Lipsticks - It's only right that the queen of lipsticks make one of my favorite matte lipsticks. The name says it all because it's creamy, comfortable on the lips and does not dry my lips out as most other ones do. But the color pay-off is intense so be sure you love the color you buy. I have it here in Razzberry, and it is one of my top 5 favorite lip colors out of my entire collection. A distinction that is similar to an academy award, pulitzer or nobel peace prize.

5. Hourglass Vol. 6 Eyeshadow Palette -We all go gaga for the ambient lighting face powders, but this palette has managed to fly under the radar for a long time. I believe it is limited in its distribution, as I have only seen it at Barneys or Space.NK, but it is a must have in your eyeshadow collection. 5 out of the 6 colors are beautiful matte shades with one subtle shimmer to add a bit of dimension to any looks you create. Here is a picture of the swatches I posted in Instagram a while back. See? I told you it was good.

6. Burberry 'Light Glow' Natural Blush - I have a ton of matte blushes, but Burberry ones are by far my most used. They are easy to apply over powder or liquid foundation without sticking or going on splotchy. I made the mistake of reaching for a shimmer blush recently and my cheeks ended up looking like disco balls by mid day. This further solidified my devotion to matte blush. This Burberry shade in Tangerine is actually more radiant on my face than one with shimmer. That's how you know it's a good blush.

May 2014 Beauty Favorites

I use them. I love them. I have to talk about them. Here are my beauty favorites from the month of May:

1. Tarte  LipSurgence Lip Tint in Lovely - Jumbo lip pencils are becoming quite a problem for me. Every time I see one, I need to buy it. Case in point: this Tarte pencil. This is my first Tarte Lip Tint but I fell IN LOVE with this color. It was the perfect juicy pink-coral, and feels great on the lips. I actually feel silly that it took me this long to buy one, but it won't be my last.

2. YSL Glossy Stain in #12 Coril Fauve - Another fail on my part, this is my first YSL Glossy Stain. Please pick your stunned jaw up off the ground - it's rude. There are just soooo many lip products out there that I overlooked these, ok? OK???!!! But at least I'm here for the party now, that's what matters. All the reviews are right - these are amazing. A hybrid between a gloss, lipstick and stain - they feel great on the lips, wear beautifully and stay on forever. Need I say more? I'm guessing no because you probably already have one.

3. Zoya Nail Polish Remover - Never thought I would see the day when a nail polish remover made my monthly favorites, but it has. The day has come. And once again, all of you were right. I have been reading about this remover for eons and finally picked one up. One swipe on my nails and it instantly blew every other nail polish remover out of the water.  Late to the Zoya party, but now I'm here.

4. Sunday Riley Artemis Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil* - Oh, another Sunday Riley product makes it to my favorites list? You betcha. This cult classic serum is an absolute essential in my skincare regimen, and when they sent me this face oil to try, I had a sneaking suspicion I would love. Whatta ya know? I did. Designed for combination and problematic skin, it helps to balance, detoxify, clarify and tone the skin. Whew, just saying it is exhausting but it delivers on its promise. The scent is quite strong, but dissipates after just a few minutes. Sunday Riley products are known to give you a glow, and this oil is no exception. My skin is radiant after only using for a few weeks. And that's the goal isn't it?? Yes, it is.

5. First Aid Beauty Blemish Patrol Pads* - Holy Grail Alert! Holy Grail Alert! These pads have finally reached that coveted spot. Since we are all friends here I will share a little secret with you: I did not like this pads when I first used them. I thought they were doing nothing and saw no results. But for some reason, I kept using them twice daily. Welp, after one week I had no blemishes. After two weeks, no blemishes. After THREE weeks, no blemishes. At first I couldn't figure out what I was using that was giving me such clear skin, until I stopped these for a few days. Do you know what I got? Yes, A PIMPLE. Pulled these out, and the breakouts stopped. A coincidence - I think not. (ok, I know not. They are magical)

6. Hourglass Ambient Powder Brush - Yes, this was a splurge but I don't regret even one penny of this brush purchase. I use to apply most of my finishing powders since it can be turned sideways and used for great contouring or use full on to get a broader application. The hair is incredibly soft and deposits just enough color. It took me a long time to decide if I should get this brush, and after one use I was sad I hadn't purchased sooner.

Summertime Lips

So red it's almost orange. I didn't even know I had a thing for these bright vibrant coral shades until I looked in my drawer and realized I have bought quite a few at this point. And though they look good worn any time of the year, summer is when they seem the most appropriate. These four shades run the gamut from sheer and juicy to matte and bold.

1. Lipstick Queen in Stoked* - Swipe it on once for a subtle hint of color, or build it up for a true punch. The texture of this new color from Lipstick Queen's Endless Summer collection is lightweight and hydrating and I can already see this being a favorite of mine for the summer.

2. Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Raven - One of the longest wearing lipstick formulas I own, these Hourglass Opaque Rouges are no joke. Super pigmented, super matte and

surprisingly super comfortable on the lips. I already own the shade Canvas which has become one of my holy grail lip colors, so Raven was the perfect next color. These lipsticks feel like velvet on the lips and this color is the quintessential fiery coral. Buy it and thank me later.

3. Laura Mercier Rouge Nouveau Weightless Lip Color in Mod - Slightly less pigmentation than Hourglass and a true matte texture, this is weightless on the lips. Often I can feel matte lipsticks on my lips, but this is easy to wear and rarely needs reapplication. I can see this with glowing, dewy skin and lots of lashes. Oh and a beach, umbrella drink and straw fedora.

4. Bite Beauty High Pigment Pencil in Zinfandel - I am not going to stop until I have collected every bite beauty lip color out there. I LIVE for this brand. All of the products feel amazing on the lips, have food grade ingredients and wear forever. I bought this Zinfandel shade and another shade called Tart in the same Sephora shopping trip - and frankly I am quite proud of that since at one point I had 7 Bite shades in my hand and forced myself to pick only two. My favorite quality is the pencil tip which makes application a breeze.  And it is much thinner and more pointed than similar pencil style lip products which again makes Bite beauty a winner in my book.

A Bit Obsessed: March 2014 Beauty Favorites

Always my favorite posts to read on other blogs, monthly beauty favorites are equally as fun to talk about on my little space on the internet.  This past month was a smorgasbord of skincare, hair and makeup products that rocked my beauty loving world.  I'm sure you have seem me post about some of these already on my Instagram, but here is a more in depth look at my experience with March's beauty favorites:

1. Dolce & Gabbana Rosebud Blush - Darn camera and it's settings, it dulls this blush a bit, thus robbing you of experiencing the vibrant color explosion that is Rosebud blush.  The phase "pop of color" should have been coined from this blush. A bright coral that even on my paler than pale skin looks beautiful and natural.  I wore it all through the winter, so don't expect me to put it away now that the warmer weather is coming.  Heck, I may just throw it in another future monthly faves just so you don't forget about it.

2. Sachajuan Hair Repair - I have been on a hair product roll recently.  I am not that excited about hair products to be honest, so I rarely write about them.  But when I find good ones, they are good. And then I feel I am cheating all of you by not sharing the news.  So after this recent post, I have again found a hair product I love.  I use this Sachajuan Hair Repair once a week on my ends, and while "like butta" is better used with skincare references, "like silk" seems more fitting to describe my hair after a go at this.  Pantene commercial girls have nothing on me.

3. Murad Perfecting Night Cream (c/o) - Day by day, minute by minute, I am becoming a Murad fangirl (this spf cream has recently reached holy grail status for me).  Each and every product I try keeps luring me in further and further, and this Perfecting Night Cream is no exception.  Designed to help restore moisture and hydrate the skin, my oily skin (which needs moisture too don't forget) just eats this stuff up! A little goes a long way for me with this, but the next morning's glow is proof that it's just enough.

4. Fresh Seaberry Restorative Body Cream - Winter skin aka alligator skin (for me at least) is not pleasant, and though my face may be super oily, my body can be quite dry.  Put a cape on this body cream, because it has been saving my skin.  Intensely rich and hydrating with tons of omega 3, 6, 7 and 9, seaberry oil and vitamin E, it helps to nourish my skin immediately but still allows me to get dressed without the (often) required dry-down, 15 minute waiting period.  Oh, and it smells divine.

5. By Terry Cover Expert - Hey flawless skin, how you doin?  Only a smidge is needed, but this foundation is absolutely beautiful.  A little more coverage then the Sheer Expert, this gives me a gorgeous naturally radiant (but not shiny) complexion.  Spring is not ready for the amazing face I am going to serve it with this number.  Get ready.

6. First Aid Beauty Skin Rescue Deep Cleanser (c/o) - Hey, First Aid Beauty - how do you manage to knock it out of the park with every product?  First I began with loving this mask (and review on it here), then I nicknamed their Ultra Repair Cream a "wonder cream" because it is that good (review here), and now this Skin Rescue Deep Cleanser has knocked my socks off.  Sometimes when treating my acne prone skin, I don't always want to use an acid based cleanser.  And other gel cleansers just make my skin too dry, which is why I fell in love with this one from First Aid Beauty.  No acids, not drying, and great at helping me keep my blemishes at bay.  It's a triple threat.

7. Bobbi Brown Brightening Finishing Powder - In all honesty, this product was a total dud when I first bought it.  Too shiny, hard to detect on the skin - all around fail.  And then I began using the Murad Mattifying SPF cream which changed how all other products sat on my skin.  So I gave this a go again, and voila! It was stunning.  After I apply my foundation, I dust it along my cheeks and forehead and it helps to immediately illuminate and finish my makeup, giving the skin an airbrushed appearance.  Already predicting a pan hitting moment in the future with this powder. 

8. Mario Badescu Special Mask for Oily Skin (c/o) - When is a Mario Badescu product not making it into my monthly favorites.  The whole brand has redefined the way I treat my acne prone skin, and this mask is now part of a long list of products (for more recommendations, read this post) that are great at helping me fight the war against pimples.  Decongesting pores, cleaning out dirt and grime, controlling oil, this mask does it all. 

9. Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick in Raven - All hail Hourglass.  If there is a knighting ceremony for a beauty brand, I would like to recommend Hourglass.  Every darn product is just amazing.  I talk about them way too much on this blog, but I can't help it.  They never disappoint. I already have a natural shade in this lipstick formulation and swear by it, so why did it take me so long to buy another? WHO KNOWS??  But I have rectified that problem and bought Raven, the most stunning vibrant red-orange shade.  No this color is not for the faint of heart so be prepared, but it's a knockout.  *wolf whistle*

A Bit Obsessed: February 2014 Favorites

It's baaaaack!!!  I skipped my monthly favorites for January because I was testing so many different things but I am back with some great picks for February.  These posts are truly one of my favorite (no pun intended, har har) to read from other bloggers, so I really enjoy doing them myself.  2014 has a lot to live up to beauty wise, because I found some pretty amazing things during my beauty exploration in 2013.  But so far, the year is starting off strong with my favorite finds - so I am feeling hopeful.  Here are my favorites from the past two months:

1. Chanel Le Vernis Nail Color in Magic and Tapage - Magic was a limited edition color exclusive to Chanel.com and Macy's, but it was a beauty.  A gorgeous deep navy that was just the perfect shade of blue (see swatch here).  Tapage was from the Spring 2014 Collection and if this color does not perk up your mood just by looking at it, then nothing will.  A bright red/coral that is perfect to wear both in the winter, when your nails need a bit of life, and the spring/summer when it's taboo not to have bright nails (see swatch here).

2. Sunday Riley Good Genes - Yup, I fell victim to all the hype surrounding this product.  And thank goodness I did, because I adore it.  I wear this as a serum under my night time moisturizer and even upon first application, it made my skin glow.  It's designed to be a brightening, multitasking and radiance treatment and it delivers on every promise - immediately at that.  Plump, supple, radiant, and glowing is the only way to describe my skin the next morning - otherwise know as perfect skin.  I now understand why people freak out when they run out of this stuff - I dispense it like it's liquid gold, never sparing even a drop.

3. Glam Glow Supermud Clearing Treatment - Well isn't this just a month of cult classic favorites, right? I bought this during the same haul as my Good Genes, and yup I loved it too.  It really does clean out pores like no other treatment, and has a slight exfoliating effect as well, so after my skin is always smooth and beautiful.  This did come in a set with the Youthmud Tinglexfoliate treatment mask, and while my skin is nowhere near sensitive, it was a tad too harsh for my skin to take.  But the Supermud original is the jam and worth every penny.

4. REN Bio-Retinoid Anti-Aging Cream (c/o) - I dedicated an entire blog post to this product as it was my first experience with Retinol, and it was life changing.  I have seen products help with my breakouts before, but nothing quite like this cream - it had profound results on how smooth, clear and even my skin looked.  You can read the entire post here.  In the meantime, snag a sample of this if you can, you won't be disappointed.  

5. Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation - What is a favorites post on this blog without Hourglass, amiright? Once again, they knocked it out of the park again with this product.  It is a liquid/cream/mousse like foundation that goes on flawlessly, and does a great job of keeping me matte throughout the day.  I always still need to touch up with powder (I am that oily) but this foundation has some serious staying power, lasting all day for me. My Hourglass love affair continues.

6. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz and Brow Powder Duo (c/o) - If there was any brow product that could steer me away from my Hourglass Brow Tool, it would be ones from the brow queen herself, Anastasia.  Both of these have made me cheat on my holy grail Hourglass, and with such great results, I can't say I feel bad.  The Brow Wiz pencil gives a much more exact and bolder look for when I am wearing a bit more makeup, while the Powder duo is a bit more natural for more subtle days.  With the powder duo, the ability to mix two colors makes it even more of a perfect fit for my hair color.  But application and colors aside, the staying power on these products is ridiculous - they last ALL. DAY. LONG.  This summer humidity better get ready for my brows.

7. Nude Perfect Cleansing Oil (c/o) - Never met a cleansing oil I didn't love (ok maybe a few, but I block those out), and this Nude oil is no exception.  It's extremely gentle and not as thick as other cleansing oils, making it easier to use when removing even the most stubborn makeup.  Sometimes when the cleansing oils are too thick, it takes more work than it's worth to wash my face - no thank you. 

8. Tom Ford Lip Color in Pink Dusk - This was one of my first experiences with Tom Ford lip colors, and of course I fell in love.  *watches wallet contents empty* It's a full coverage lipstick, which I love with an extremely creamy texture.  The only caveat with this color is that  my lips need to be exfoliated properly or it won't apply evenly.  This made me a bit hesitant at the beginning when using it, but the color was just so darn pretty and opaque that I settled for the fact that it would be a bit more high maintenance.  The beauty end justified the fussy means.
